Feeling the ‘Hygge’ in Copenhagen
Copenhagen was our first experience of Denmark and what a great first impression to the country it is! The people are incredibly friendly and helpful, and speak at least one if not two languages in addition to Danish.
The water features heavily in the Danish capital, with a series of canals leading out into a busy harbour area. This, along with the overall style and feel of the city, gives the city a feel of Amsterdam blended with Paris..
Must Dos on a Visit to Copenhagen
City Bus tour
Our go-to in most cities, the hop-on hop-off bus really helps to get your self orientated and uncovers areas of the city that may not be so obvious. We would recommend getting the ticket which gives access to all three lines which allows a full overview of Copenhagen. While there are public buses, there is no underground train or overground tram, and so the bus tour is a good value way to get around the city and visit the main sites.
Boat Tour
In addition to the hop-on hop-off bus, a boat tour is a great way to see the city from a different advantage, opening up parts of the city not visible from inside the city itself. With a tour guide on board, it is also a great way to learn more about the history and culture of Copenhagen. During our tour, we were lucky to be able to see the Royal Yacht moored out in the harbour.
Tivoli Food Hall
On the side of Tivoli Gardens, this is a great place to find a wide range of food with many restaurants under the one roof. Options include Tacos/Burritos, Pizza, Sushi, Burgers, Curry and more – also plenty of options for Gluten Free and Vegan.
Reffen
The easiest way we found to get to Reffen was on the purple line of the hop-on hop-off bus. It’s a little way out from the main centre and on the way, the bus passes Christiana, an independent community and commune where around 1,000 people live. Reffen is by the water and is an entire area of street food, where around 50 ‘start-ups’ offer cuisine from all around the world, again with many Gluten Free and Vegan options.
The Little Mermaid
With an emphasis on the word ‘little’! The Little Mermaid, sat on a rock in the harbour, is the iconic symbol of Copenhagen. And while The Little Mermaid is certainly well worth seeing, it is a little like visiting the Mona Lisa and feeling that slight surprise and disappointment over its size. You may have to wait a while to grab a photo – but you will know where the statue is located, just look for the crowd!
