Coffee & Cake – Falmouth, Cornwall

For a small coastal town on Cornwall, the number and range of independent coffee shops and bakeries is truly impressive.

Cornwall has always had a bakery tradition – it was very normal for my grandparents to go to a local bakery on a regular basis for their bread (and pasties!), long after buying bread in this way was replaced by mass-produced sliced loaves from a local supermarket elsewhere across the UK.

This tradition has been kept alive in Falmouth, and elsewhere across Cornwall, with the establishment of more modern artisan bakeries and coffee shops. Here are a few of my favourites in Falmouth…

Gylly Beach Cafe
Gyllyngvase Beach, Cliff Road
With its own bakery sat in a purpose-built building right on the beach, fresh quality bakes are a given at Gylly Beach Cafe. From freshly baked pastries and cinnamon buns in the morning, to cakes and slices throughout the day, as well as a selection of bread all baked fresh daily (available from inside the cafe and the take-away outside) and coffee roasted in Cornwall. Luckily for those looking for gluten-free options, there is usually always at least one option – a blueberry almond slice was a recent enjoyable find!

Stones Bakery
High Street
I don’t think I have ever seen a bakery in the UK that offers such a wide range of baked goods. With such a wide variety of breads, pastries and cakes, as well as a cafe, this is one of the best bakeries around. Unfortunately not great for those of us who are gluten-free, although some of the cafe breakfast options could be ordered minus the bread. I’m told the fresh doughnuts are amazing – and they certainly look it!

A micro coffee roaster and coffee shop with an impressive selection of sweet treats (some gluten free) and gift items.

Haven Coffee Box
Castle Drive
Could you get a better view with your coffee?! Located near Pendennis Point just beyond Castle Beach, this converted horse trailer serves a wide range of hot and cold drinks, as well as a selection of sweet treats -there is usually at least one gluten free option. Perfect after a walk around the point or morning dip in the sea!
